Co-operative legislation review

The Industrial and Provident Societies Acts 1893 – 2014 are the main legislative framework for the registration and regulation of co-operatives in Ireland.  These Acts, which have remained largely unchanged since the time of Queen Victoria, are currently subject to review by the Department of Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation.

Co-operative Housing Ireland’s initial submission to the review can be accessed here.  Our submission calls for:

  • the retention of separate business form for co-ops, apart from companies
  • the language of the Acts to be changed to include the word ‘co-operative’
  • legislative clarity around the duties of directors of co-ops
  • modernising provisions for e-returns and improvements in the language of the Acts
