St Finian’s childcare service picked up a quality award on April 17th, at the Early Childcare Conference, at Croke Park conference centre.
This award comes at the highest level of Siolta, the National Quality Framework for Early Childhood Education. St Finians is the second co-operative childcare service to be assessed and awarded under the framework, following on from Brookview in Tallaght.
In 2002 the minister for Education & Science launched the centre for Early Childhood Development & Education (CECDE), to develop a framework of quality across the whole field of early years education for children from birth to 6 years. Siolta is the resulting framework that is administered by the Department of Education and Science and that measures 16 separate standards.
St Finians is funded by Pobal, and is part of NABCO, the national federation for the co-operative housing movement. The service opened in 2001, with 2 staff & 12 children and today caters for up to 50 children. The Siolta award is the second quality award for the centre, having succeeded in 2006 through the Quality Improvement Programme of the Irish Preschool Parents Association.
The centre received capital funding to expand its service in 2009.
