Build with us

Since its foundation in 1973, Co-operative Housing Ireland has provided 7,480 homes through home-ownership, shared ownership and social rented co-operatives. Our vision is of an Ireland where everyone has the option to participate fully in their own and the wider community's social, economic and environmental development through co-operation.

Partnering with CHI is an opportunity to work with an organisation on a mission to lead the development of social, economic and environmental sustainability in Ireland through co-operative effort and the provision of co-operative housing.

Our Approach

The importance of location

CHI is expanding across Ireland in response to housing needs. We are taking a strategic approach to this by growing the number of homes we’re delivering in locations where we already have a strong foothold.

Working in partnership

Building lasting partnerships with funders, developers and local authorities is key to CHI’s success. These partnerships often continue past initial projects and see us partnering with trusted organisations on several projects.

Funding what we do

Robust funding is essential to what we do. CHI accesses finance from the full range of sources to fund the construction and acquisition of new homes. CHI is committed to exploring new funding opportunities.

How we help our partners

Funding

As an Approved Housing Body, CHI has access to funding provided by the Housing Finance Agency and leading Irish banks for the purchase and construction of homes that will then be made available for social housing.

Partners in Delivery

CHI has been providing housing for many decades. We pride ourselves on our professionalism and ability to build strong partnerships with developers, local authorities and funders to ensure the delivery of quality dwellings that our Members can call home.

Social Impact

Building with us means making a lasting social impact on the greater community. The construction process is only a snapshot in time. The life of a newly built home lasts far beyond that. As a co-operative, our relationship with our Members extends for many years. Co-operatives are people-centred and value led. We support our Members in whatever way we can, and provide training programmes to support them to build the skills they need to exercise real leadership in their communities.

Our recent developments

In response to the current housing crisis CHI delivered almost 600 homes in 2021 alone. Since our foundation, the organisation has delivered schemes of varying sizes from single dwellings to developments of 200 units, using various combinations of funding and leasing models including:

  • Acquisition and new build

  • Capital Advance Leasing Facility (CALF or Housing Finance Agency funding)

  • Management of unsold affordable Local Authority Homes

  • Private Sector leasing

Our relationship with CHI began when we developed Brookhill, Carrigaline Co. Cork, a development of 69 family homes. We also worked with them on Baunacloka Heights, Mungret Gate in Limerick, an estate of 46 homes. We were delighted to close both estates in 2020. The advantage of working with an organisation such as CHI is twofold: you are dealing with an experienced organisation who have provided housing solutions for many decades, but also you have a closed end contract where you are guaranteed that the homes you have developed will all be bought. Working with CHI ensures more funding opportunities and better rates on loans. Access to funding in this way is essential to support housing delivery at this level.
Neil Collins, Managing Director of the Homeland Group
I’d easily spend an hour discussing how amazing our new home is. It’s as though our dreams have finally come true. The fact that the houses in this estate are so fantastic is the icing on the cake for us. Our new home couldn’t have come to us at a better time. Having a home offers us a sense of stability which we haven’t had in a long time. It’s especially wonderful for the kids too, as the garden here is so much larger than what we had. We spent a lot of our free time in parks and green spaces for the kids to play in. It will be a huge change for us as a family to have a safe place for them to play just beyond the back door. Our kids are three and five, but they are as cute as foxes, so they did get a good grasp of social distancing and hygiene.
